A Consistent One-dimensional Model for the Turbulent Tachocline

چکیده

The first consistent model for the turbulent tachocline is presented, with the turbulent diffusivity computed within the model instead of being specified arbitrarily. For the origin of the 3D turbulence a new mechanism is proposed. Owing to the strongly stable stratification, the mean radial shear is stable, while the horizontal shear is expected to drive predominantly horizontal, quasi-2D motions in thin slabs. Here I suggest that a major source of 3D overturning turbulent motions in the tachocline is the secondary shear instability due to the strong, random vertical shear arising between the uncorrelated horizontal flows in neighbouring slabs. A formula for the vertical diffusivity due to this turbulence, equation (9), is derived and applied in a simplified 1D model of the tachocline. It is found that Maxwell stresses due to an oscillatory poloidal magnetic field of a few hundred gauss are able to confine the tachocline to a thickness below 5 Mm. The integral scale of the 3D overturning turbulence is the buoyancy scale, on the order of 10 km and its velocity amplitude is a few m/s, yielding a vertical turbulent diffusivity on the order of 10 cm/s.

Angular Momentum Transport by Gravity waves in the Solar Interior

We present self-consistent numerical simulations of the sun’s convection zone and radiative interior using a two-dimensional model of its equatorial plane. The background reference state is a one-dimensional solar structure model. Turbulent convection in the outer convection zone continually excites gravity waves which propagate throughout the stable radiative interior and deposit their angular...

A Three-dimensional Spherical Nonlinear Interface Dynamo

A fully three-dimensional, nonlinear, time-dependent spherical interface dynamo is investigated using a finite-element method based on the three-dimensional tetrahedralization of the spherical system. The spherical interface dynamo model consists of four zones: an electrically conducting and uniformly rotating core, a thin differentially rotating tachocline, a uniformly rotating turbulent conve...

Self-consistent theory of turbulent transport in the solar tachocline II. Tachocline confinement

Aims. We provide a consistent theory of the tachocline confinement (or anisotropic momentum transport) within an hydrodynamical turbulence model. The goal is to explain helioseismological data, which show that the solar tachocline thickness is at most 5% of the solar radius, despite the fact that, due to radiative spreading, this transition layer should have thickened to a much more significant...

Self-consistent theory of turbulent transport in the solar tachocline

Aims. To understand the fundamental physical processes important for the evolution of solar rotation and distribution of chemical species, we provide theoretical predictions for particle mixing and momentum transport in the stably stratified tachocline. Methods. By envisioning that turbulence is driven in the tachocline, we compute the amplitude of turbulent flow, turbulent particle diffusiviti...

b-PLANE MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC TURBULENCE IN THE SOLAR TACHOCLINE

This Letter discusses the role of a weak toroidal magnetic field in modifying the turbulent transport properties of stably stratified rotating turbulence in the tachocline. A local two-dimensional b-plane model is investigated numerically. In the absence of magnetic fields, nonlinear interactions of Rossby waves lead to the formation of strong mean zonal flows. However, the addition of even a v...
